ARCHIVED NEWS:
JANUARY 2008
The IMEA
Conference is being
held January 24th - 26th here on campus in Pocatello. I am presenting a
percussion workshop on Thursday the 24th, and perfoming with the ISU
Steel Band that evening for the host night concert. Rumor has it that
thanks to John Adams I might show up as a ringer with the wind ensemble
on the same gig. There is also a jazz gig the following
night,
Friday the 25th. Busy weekend!
AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2007
I am now an endorser of PROMARK
sticks and mallets. Bruce and his team over at Percussion
Construction decided to combine forces with an industry leader,
bringing his keyboard mallet expertise down to Houston. Percussion
Construction mallets will now carry the Promark name - This should be a
great thing for all considered. Looking forward to being on
board.
JUNE 2007
• The Percussion
Construction links are not currently working, as Bruce is
updating and re-hosting the site in a big way. Rumor has it that there
might be some real big news coming along regarding this fine company
(Stay tuned for more info.)
MAY 2007
• It's official: Last fall's solo marimba work All Times Identical to Recent
Years is
now available from Paul over at Go
Fish Music. Don't forget you
can also hear the definative recording by picking up Tom Burritt's CD,
conveniently titled All
Times Identical, from Go Fish as well.
MARCH
/ APRIL 2007
• New Date announced for the premiere of Three Private Wars. April
21st, in the Jensen Grand Concert Hall.
• A successful IDAHO PAS DAY OF PERCUSSION in Boise, Idaho, on
March 17th, where I enjoyed the position of mallet and symphonic
clinician (at this PAS Day, you have to do TWO clinics!) I ran into
drumset clinician Dave Mancini (who I had actually studied a bit with
over 20 years ago) and met marching phenom / headliner Jeff Queen.
Thanks to James Harrison, PAS - Idaho, and BSU for hosting me; and to
my sponsors, Sabian and Percussion Construction. Looks like I'll be
back over there shortly, for the NW Percussion Festival.
JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2007
-
• Rehearsals well underway for Trio Lyrique's February 10th
premiere of Three
Private Wars, at
the Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the
Stephens Performing Arts Center. Seems to be coming together nicely.
**UPDATE** CONCERT POSTPONED due to performer illness; NEW DATE APRIL
21st.
• Preparations for the Febraury 17th ISU DAY OF PERCUSSION
continue. Our guest artists will be Jeffrey Moore and Julie Hill.
Having never played Steve Reich's Nagoya
Marimbas, I am feverishly practicing my "white key" chops
for the February performance with Dr. Moore. Accuracy is a definite
issue for me with this work; any of you who have played it know what
I'm talking about. Date is Febtraury 17th, Location is Goranson Hall in
the Fine Arts Bldg on the ISU campus. All are welcome, and admission is
free.
NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2006

A big PASIC for me, thanks in no small part to my good friend, Tom
Burritt, who commissioned and performed two new works for 2006: Euonymus Alatus,
for large percussion ensemble, and All
Times Identical to Recent Years, for
solo marimba. For the record, the University of Texas percussion studio
rocks big time. I am sure they are not quite human, but rather,
monsters, in the classic sense. In addition, the work Corps-tet
was performed at PASIC by J.B. Smith's group on the Thursday Lit
session. Thanks to the ASU studio for their work on behalf of
new
music and all the represented composers.
Euonymus is
being published by
C. Alan
Publications - I am really thankful to Nathan Daughtrey for
his
hard work on getting that available by PASIC. I have not yet quite
determined what will happen publishing-wise with All TImes Identical; I
currently have it available for sale under the "Hasenworks" label (see
the compositions page). Tom Burritt has released a recording
of it
as the title track to his new CD, All
TImes Identical, on the Go Fish Music
label.
A new non-percussion (!) work just completed: Three Private Wars for
soprano, clarinet, and piano sets the text of Idaho poet Greg Nicholl.
This was a joy to write, and we are looking forward to a February
premiere by the Idaho State University faculty ensemble, Trio Lyrique.
